Wicking Pajamas For A Dry And Comfortable Night's Sleep

by Laura Wheelock

Wicking pajamas are sleepwear made from material that pulls moisture away from the skin to help keep the sleeper dry and comfortable as well as modulate body temperature. They are very effective for people who sweat a lot at night or have hot flashes that leave them drenched in perspiration.

Both men and women can suffer from night sweats. There are several different causes for night sweats. Menopause and pregnancy are the most common for women, but prescribed medication side effects, hormonal disorders, infections, cancer and treatments can cause night sweats that leave the person hot and sticky and unable to sleep.

Fabric that wicks moisture away from the body is often used in sportswear and workout clothing to help keep people dry who engage in vigorous activities. Just as a wick in an oil lamp draws the oil to the tip to feed the flame, wicking material draws sweat on the body through the fabric to the outside where it can more easily evaporate. When it evaporates, it leaves a cooling sensation that lowers the temperature of the body.

Some casual clothing such as designer golf shirts and other business casual clothing is made from moisture wicking fabric to help professionals maintain a well-groomed appearance after long hours of work or during humid weather. Each wicking fabric is different, depending on the number of strands used in manufacture. Products with more strands absorb more and dry quicker.

Fabric that is made with more strands will wash well for years and still retain its wicking function. Pajamas that offer a high quality material and have a solid guarantee are the best. Cheaper products with fewer strands will not be effective for long and will soon become unusable.

Moisture wicking fabric is also used to make clothing to be worn in cold weather. People exercising in cold weather such as skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports may work up a sweat that is dangerous to keep on the skin. When the person stops to rest, the sweat will become cold and maybe even freeze. This could cause serious illness. Wicking material can help avoid this problem.

Pajamas made with wicking material are mostly marketed toward women because they are more prone to night sweats than men. However, they are also manufactured for men. They can be very useful for anyone when they are hiking, camping or trekking in the mountains for several days.

Pajamas are made in many different styles and colors. They can be short or long-sleeved and come with short or long pants. Some manufacturers make only one style. Good quality products will feel like soft, lightweight cotton. They should not feel sticky or hard like polyester fabric.

Good wicking products will quickly transfer moisture and heat away from the skin to keep it dry. Also called microfiber, the fabric is made from extra-fine fibers. These fine fibers are exceptionally strong and absorbent as well as very lightweight and cool. This microfiber yarn is a hydrophic yarn, which means it hates moisture.

Wicking pajamas are available with different wicking abilities, fit, price and texture. They may cover specific areas of the body or the full body with long sleeves and long pants. It is important to choose the right style to make sleeping as comfortable as possible.
