Best Thanksgiving Grand Canyon National Park Airplane Trips

by Lea Fallon

Christmas is creeping up, but before then we will have the last 'other' major holiday of the year-Thanksgiving. Even though Thanksgiving is a time you want to spend with your family, you don't have to do it by lounging around the house. Taking an airplane tour at the Grand Canyon could be the ultimate holiday fun, but make sure you book soon, because tickets are selling out fast.

Why is it important to buy your tour in advance? Quite simply, it is because Las Vegas is the most popular spot to visit the canyon from. The city is just over 100 miles from the National Park, and it takes only a little over 30 minutes to get out there on a flight. Most planes out of Vegas fly to the West Rim, but you can also take a tour of the South Rim if you prefer. The distance to the South Rim from Vegas is longer, but it only takes around 60 minutes to fly there on a plane tour.

One good thing about going to the West Rim is that you can take a landing tour. When you take a landing tour, you get an aerial view of Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and the Grand Canyon, plus you get to land at the canyon and explore by foot.

Landing Tour Options

If you don't have time for a landing tour, you can take an air-only tour of the canyon, which is good when you're short on time or have a tight budget. That said, if you have the extra money or can stretch your budget, I strongly recommend you consider taking a landing tour because you'll see and do more. You'll have as much as 2 hours to explore the canyon after you land.

There are plenty of things you'll enjoy doing. For instance, you don't want to miss out on the Skywalk. You can add tickets to the Skywalk to your tour package so you can walk out on the glass platform and stand 4000 feet above the canyon floor. Another Grand Canyon airplane tour comes with a helicopter descent to the canyon floor. You can also add on tickets for a helicopter ride down to the bottom of the canyon. On this particular tour, you can even add a boat ride down the Colorado River, making this trip the most ultimate one available.

Tours Of The South Rim

While the West Rim is fun, it isn't your only option. From Las Vegas, the South Rim is a quick and easy 1-hour flight, which is awesome when you compare it to having drive 5.5 hours via bus or car. Once you get to the South Rim, you can transfer to a helicopter and fly over to the North Rim and back. In addition, you can add on a ground tour experience by bus or Jeep.

Plane Tours Are Less Expensive Than Helicopter Tours

Airplane tours keep costs down because the planes can carry more passengers. As many as 19 people can fly on each tour in a plane that's designed just for sightseeing. These planes are equipped with large windows, a roomy cabin, lounge-style seats and, most importantly, wings that are attached to the top of the body so you can see everything below.

Of course, airplanes are cheaper than, say, helicopter tours and are much more fitting for large groups. One thing that you need to be aware of, is that these tours are in high demand. For this very reason, I suggest you purchase your Thanksgiving flight tour as soon as you are able. It's a good idea to book your tour when you confirm your travel plans so you don't get caught at the last minute missing the tour or having to pay a higher price for tickets. To be safe, you should book your tour at least a week in advance.

Plenty To See And Do

Plane tours are a great way to see the canyon since they are affordable and come with a lot of options. With additional touring options available at the West and South Rims, choosing an affordable airplane package doesn't mean that you have to miss out on what the canyon has to offer.

To get the best deal on your tour package, be sure to book your tour online, which is convenient to do when you use your credit card. Both rims are beautiful to visit, and fortunately you can fly to either one out of Las Vegas, so be prepared for some awesome scenic views and exhilarating adventures.
