Termites -- Know Them To Kill Them!

Amazing eaters

Fascinatingly termites are as old as dinosaurs. This insect has a long existence even before the ants. The most amazing part is though they are really small in size but their appetite is huge. They can eat all the time. This is the reason why they multiply so fast. Just consider a medium-sized room having wooden floor. It only takes three weeks for a single termite colony to eat up the complete floor. Wood is their favorite but not the only one; they also like to chew up stuff like clothes, paper, wiring and other household stuff.

Nest, Mounds and Colonies

There is a huge number of termite species in existence but all those are not pests. Among all, only 10% species are those that inhabit around humans while the other species, do not. There are some termite species that make huge nests as long as 30 feet. Also there are some extreme builders whose mounds are beyond this height.

Termites are not at all related to ants but the way they make their colonies, it appears there is some resemblance. Just like in ants, they have divisions of class within a colony. This means termites within a colony can be workers, soldiers or males and females specific for reproduction.

Workers, Soldiers and Reproductive

First of all the workers are held responsible for all damage caused to your furniture or other valuables. To make matters worse, they are blind and so they just cannot stop eating. These termites also have to take care of eggs that the queen laid and the queen herself.

The next are the soldiers that are apparently more muscular. In various termite species you will find that the defense mechanism of a soldier varies. Some soldiers block the entrance with their sticky saliva while others simple use their head to block it.

As for the reproductive counterparts, they carry wings which the males and females shed subsequent to mating. The queen is capable of laying as many as 30,000 eggs per day.

Termites are capable of biting but those bites would not harm a human. However, their defensive mechanism is so strong that you just cannot eradicate them on your own.
