3 Ways to Improve Your Business Blog

by Jason Deter

A decade ago, blogging was still a novelty. Some people enjoyed telling everybody about their lives, but it was a small minority. These days, blogging is seen as so common that it is no longer left solely in the hands of the personal bloggers. Business blogging in particular has really taken off in the last few years. If your business doesn't have a blog today, you risk being left behind as your competitors are probably blogging. Many business owners find that it's a challenge to build an engaging blog. In fact, finding the line between being a good business blogger and a bad one can be difficult. Use the following hints to help you get started.

Personal and business blogging are two different things. Personal style blogs were the first ones to become trendy. However, if you create a business blog and run it like a personal one, it won't come across as very professional. When you start a blog for your business, you must maintain your business mindset and not treat it like a personal blog. While it does put a more personable face on your business, you don't exactly need to be writing posts about what you had for lunch. If you need to, do some research and compare personal blogs with those set up by some big companies for business purposes.

You never want to stray too far from your topic with a business blog or you'll lose your readers' interest.

If you want your readers to take your business seriously, you have to come across in a professional manner. A lot of business owners, particularly people who are working on solo enterprises, confuse "being personable" with "being personal." Having a sense of humor and being a little lighthearted is fine.

At the same time, you also have to rein yourself in and stay mainly focused on business related topics. The whole professional vs. personal ratio also has to be calculated with your topic and target audience in mind. If you would think twice before saying something in a phone call or email to a customer, you should leave it out of your blog.

You may have noticed that large websites usually have a "contact us" page, and you should have one as well. If you want the press and media to use one type of contact strategy and average readers to use another, make sure those avenues are clear. Think of any reason people may want to contact you, and make sure you have this covered when you create your contact page. Make sure you have as many avenues available as possible: phone, email, contact form and snail mail (get a post office box for this if you do not want to use your business address).

You can have a lot of fun with your blog, and that's the way it's supposed to be. If you're just new to blogging, then maybe join a forum about marketing so you can learn a lot more. The main path to success with a blog is having great content, and there's no getting around that.
