Put Recycling To Work In The Office

by Tracey England

We all know how important it is to recycle properly in today's society; with ever increasing environmental problems, we need to manage our waste more effectively to reduce the use of raw materials and natural resources. So why shouldn't this be the same case in the working environment? There are many opportunities for recycling in the typical office; from paper to ink cartridges, we need to start being smarter when dealing with waste effectively.

So what can you do to start helping the environment from your desk? Take a look around for all the things that can be recycled; it's amazing how many things we throw away with the general rubbish that we wouldn't usually give a second thought too. Waste print paper, documents, and mixed paper items like magazines, envelopes and newsletters can all provide a start to sorting waste easily.

It's a simple process getting a system in place to manage the different types of waste; from paper to glass and plastic bins, the typical office can manage waste effectively. For less regularly produced waste like printer cartridges, toner and batteries, systems can still be set up in the office, but on a much smaller scale.

In order to recycle effectively, the places of disposal need to be positioned in the areas they will most be used; for example waste paper usually occurs close to desks and printing areas. Because of this, it is most effective to recycle properly when the proper waste bins are provided in the right areas; without this tactical placement, a system may not be as effective as planned.

With the pressures of running a well operated organisation, some managers and business owners may not have the sufficient time to create these systems and take time to make them work effectively. Because of this, sometimes it is easier and more efficient to hire an external expert to manage this process and crossover waste management more effectively; with experience of working in many environments, expertise is highly valuable when creating a new operational device.

However none of this is worthwhile if employees are not kept informed with the waste they need to sort; although it may seem very simple, the message won't sink in unless you give a little training on the situation. Luckily this can be done easily when an external expert comes in to equip the office with the right equipment; a quick and simple training session can be done to put your mind at ease, and introduce a system into the workplace, helping both the future of the workplace and the environment.
