IT Marketing: The Value In Being Unique

by Clarke Bishop

If you're a technology service company you may be finding it hard to reliably attract new customers or help them find you. Well, in order to become successful you may need to make the necessary tweaks in your own marketing campaign. What's important is actually knowing what is going to work well and how to execute a well-laid out marketing plan. You have to know how to set your company apart from your competition.

You've got to give your customers a reason to feel good about your company and its something that many technology service companies don't do a particularly good job of. It is important to let potential customers know why they should work with you. You have to let them know what makes you special and sets you apart from other IT companies. Many times with technology service companies, there is way too much focus on the "what". What the specs are and the software you use and not enough on the "why". Why should I work with you? Why should I care about you? Why should I even pay attention to you? These are the questions that you need to answer.

This is where you can stand out from other IT companies. You need to have a unique selling proposition (USP). This projects who you are and why anyone should do business with you. Developing a USP takes time and effort on your part. One thing you need to think about is who your defined target market is. From there you need to be able to define what the problem is that your customers need to have solved. Defining the problem helps you relate better to what it is that your customers really want. It is important to make sure that you communicate clearly and focus on the promise that is implied to the customers for working with your company. It is important that you make sure you deliver on that promise and are able to back it up.

One of the best things that you can do to help yourself stand out is to create some proof or some guarantee. So for example, instead of talking about how many lines of server availability you have, back it up. Let your customers know that if your server goes down you will pay them $100. This helps to create a unique selling proposition in itself just from the security standpoint.

It is important to really understand your target market when creating your USP. Ultimately, in every assessment of value there is an emotional element, so for this reason it is important appeal to potential customers on an emotional level. Let them know what you can do for them and why your IT company is the best choice.
