Vampire Showdown: The Difference Between True Blood and Twilight Vampires

There are plenty of films and books that revolve around the legend of vampires, including recent additions in the past decade, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Vampire Diaries. However, the most popular titles in recent time include True Blood and Twilight. Yet, how do the two recent versions of vampires differ from one another?

Functioning in Modern Society

According to both of the series, vampires have been around for thousands of years. Yet, that is where the similarity ends.

In True Blood, vampires have decided to make themselves known to the world since the introduction of a synthetic blood substitute (known as "Tru Blood"). Since they no longer need to feed from humans, they are recognized as official citizens, have rights, and do not need to hide from society.

In Twilight, the existence of vampires must be kept secret from humans and there is a group, known as the Volturi, that keeps track of vampire activity across the world. For vampires in the Twilight universe, it is a major offense to have a vampire's existence revealed to humankind.

Blood

In True Blood, the blood of vampires is highly sought after because of the properties it contains. For example, a vampire's blood can be used to improve a human's sex life, health, and senses. Drinking a vampire's blood also connects the vampire to the human in deeply erotic ways.

In Twilight, vampires have poison in their veins instead of blood. If a human comes into contact with the poison, they can become vampires themselves.

Feeding Habits

In True Blood, the vampires do not need to feed from living creatures because of "Tru Blood". However, many of the vampires still do, although they do not kill the humans they feed from. In fact, there are vampires that pay humans to allow them to feed. As long as the vampires learn to control their feeding habits, and the humans take plenty of B-12, there is no immediate danger from feeding.

In Twilight, however, feeding from a human leads to the human becoming drained of blood and ultimately killed. During feeding, vampires also become violent and cannot stop feeding. Although some vampires resort to drinking the blood of animals, they are a minority in the Twilight universe.

Sex

In True Blood, having sex with a vampire is considered to be the best that a human will ever experience. Humans are generally not in danger, although vampires often have the urge to feed from them during the act. However, many humans seem to actually enjoy being bitten.

In Twilight, to have sex with a vampire means death. Just as they become frenzied while feeding, the vampires also display this behavior during sex and will kill their human partners. Even the actual act between the two main characters result in plenty of pain for the human.

Because the vampire basics change with each new story, vampire lore can often be very contradictory. However, although there are many differences between the vampires in True Blood and Twilight, it is all about individual preferences.
