How A Small Business Owner Can Make Full Use Of The Holiday Break

by Michael Griffiths

If you are in retail, well then, the holiday break is the time for rejoicing, because the cash registering is a-ringing non-stop. But for most small business owners, this is time of the year is the time to take a break, relax and unwind… enjoy gift giving or vacations with family and friends, a time to be merry, a time to celebrate the gift of life and relationships.

The week-long break could be a time of opportune or the time for anxiety. Like it or not, some small business owners feel uneasy when they leave their businesses at a standstill, even for a short period of time. So how can a businessman make full use of this period, yet remain at the top of his game when he returns?

Before you go on the break, send out emails to your existing clients. Of course this is a pre-vacation task - never ever send emails during the actual holidays, because your efforts will produce exactly the opposite of what you intended to achieve. Why? Because if you are not Christian, it's like a way of saying that "you don't care how important or sacred the day is - you will do business because your region is different." Some religions really prepare ahead of time so that they don't need to worry about business on Christmas Eve (December 24) and Christmas Day(December 25). If you are a wise businessman, you know that you need to respect different traditions and beliefs which you may or may not share with others. Send an email, first, wishing them well on their holiday vacation, then remind them when your company will be back for business. Just remind them that you exist - but do it BEFORE, and never during all the festivities. People will be too caught up in celebrating - they will not open your email.

Sit back and assess the true standing of your business. Is your business doing well, or is it barely surviving? Is it earning you big bucks, or has it remained stagnant for the past year? Use the break to go through the books and think if maintaining the business is still worth the time, money and effort you put into it. Or perhaps you need a new marketing approach or gimmick? Or do you need newer stocks? Use the extra time to think of ways to improve.

Make a list of the things to avoid, and the things to repeat. If a certain product gimmick resulted in quadrupled sales, then by all means, plan another one! If your social media promotions are those which opened more doors of opportunities for your business, then spread out your visibility even more - but be careful not to overdo it. If an employee has been causing you problems, then think of the best way to deal with him/her. It's time to analyse and do what's best for your small business. After all, this is still a business, and the ultimate goal of any company is to earn profit.

Use the break to recharge. If you have been so exhausted and burned-out from the hectic and toxic work schedule and work-related concerns, then this break is the best time for you to recharge your willpower, your aching muscles, your tired mind. Use the wonderful healing effect of retail therapy and relaxation to re-motivate you.

Take the time to bond with family, friends and even your pets. We have repeated this too often - a happy and contented heart leads to a fulfilling and successful business. In your desire to grow your business, never lose track of the other important things in your life - like family and relationships. These non-work related things keep you grounded. Remember that even if your business fails, your family will always be there for you. If you, however, ignored them too much in your pursuit of success, you just discover them completely gone, just when you are ready to rekindle your damaged relationships. Don't take them for granted. A good businessman would know how to balance work and family. Use the break to bond with them.

There's no need to be nervous if you need to take some time out from your precious small business. Everyone else is on vacation, too…so it's the time to be merry, a time for celebrations, and a time to reward yourself for a job well done.

Happy Holidays!
