Benefits Of Taking Computer Certification Courses

by Ron Arora

For those who've entertained the idea of taking computer certification courses, but didn't make a firm commitment to consider it or completely disregard it, here are seven noteworthy reasons why now is the time to make a decision one way or another.

Computer courses increase job prospects. Like the college degree, statistics show that employers favor job candidates who have some type of educational training and background over those who don't. In some instances, employers won't even acknowledge an application with an empty education or training field. If they use software that quickly scans every job application for this information, these particular fields, when empty, trigger the program's auto-deletion function so that the application is never seen.

Students don't have to waste time with non-essential classes. In both junior and senior college, students have to take courses that are unrelated to a chosen major. But there's no reason for someone who needs A+ skills and certification to pay for and attend an entire semester's worth of art history, physical education or music theory class. With certification, students are not distracted with these interferences so they can focus on job-specific training without extraneous costs and an overwhelming schedule.

Certification courses are cheaper than the cost of a four-year or two-year degree. On average, the cost of one year at an in-state university can cost well over $15,000 with the most expensive schools demanding over $60,000 in tuition fees alone. Even attendance at a local community college can cost well into the thousands. Certification costs, however, can fall into the mere hundreds, and they don't contribute to the country's growing student debt.

Certifications are credible and recognized forms of achievement. Computer certification addresses the number one complaint that employers have about job candidates today, which is that they simply don't have the proper qualifications. A job applicant with computer certification is a job applicant with recognizable, appropriate and relevant skills applicable to today's demands. Present employers are well aware of currently available certification, and some may even require or prefer some form of it over a traditional college degree.

Today's courses address today's technology. Computer certification is available in a wide variety of skills, ranging from the vendor-specific skill (like MySQL or Microsoft) to the vendor-neutral skill (like CompTIA or ISC). Even software-specific and internet-specific certification is available, qualifying individuals for jobs in graphic editing, multimedia, or online social network programming.

They're easy to obtain. Anyone who's reading this article already has the basic computer skills and equipment required to learn more, especially since the bulk of these courses can be taken online. Online learning has never been as readily available as it is today, and it requires little more than a computer, an internet connection and a sincere intent to learn.

There's plenty of free research material, support groups, and practice tests online. The internet is a terrific tool in complementing class material. Thousands of helpful and freely available resources are at anyone's disposal, ranging from online discussion groups and forums to open-source textbooks and practice tests.
