A good referee must always have an understanding of the events occurring in the soccer field; thus, there are some vital characteristics to be found in a good youth soccer referee. Listed below are some of the qualities essential in good soccer referee:

* The foremost quality required in a good referee is maintaining grace under pressure.

* A good referee definitely needs some strong organizational skills.

* The fundamental knowledge of the game and related laws is a quality that must be possessed by a good referee. There are some laws that are so fundamental to the game that a lack of knowledge of them would make a totally incompetent referee.

* A good referee might make mistakes but they should be minimal and not basic errors.

* The kids on soccer teams come from different cultural and social backgrounds, but being a referee, it is imperative that s/he treats each team with similar standards and makes the play objective and fair.

* Understanding the rules fully and making the teams understand them before the game begins is important.

* Give responsibility to the team captains to present any needed information needed to be conveyed to their respective teams.

* A good referee must know how to deal with temper tantrums, pouting and poor losers.

* The communication skills are the single most important skill set that a referee will be using during their tenure.

* Tackling the parents’ queries and facing the confrontations with a calm authoritative mind is necessary. Care should be taken to see that no parents are hurt or feel injustice done to their child. A role of peacemaker should also be played well by the referee.

* Soccer is a game that gets heated very fast, especially when players make exaggerated aggressive displays. The referee must be ready to get the game under control if things start to get out of hand.

* A referee must know how to position himself between the players who are having disputes and send them to different sides of the field. Issuing the warnings fearlessly and giving yellow cards, and further sending the player out with a red card. Main concern here should be keeping the environment safe for all the players in the team.

* Each game should be an assignment for the referee to keep the enthusiasm of the players and teach the players to value the game they play.

Lastly, for a successful game, the referee should be full of motivation and enthusiasm. Thus, the game can be made more pleasant for everyone involved, including the spectators and referee himself
