A Few Things All Parents Should Keep In Mind

by Tony Zarrineh

There are many different parenting styles that exist right now, and choosing one that will work for you and your children can be a hard choice to make. Parenting styles are a dime a dozen, so you will have to use your best discretion when utilizing one for your kids. Most of us have experienced the inner voice that gives us advice on which direction to go and what choices to make. This article focuses upon some of the best parenting styles that are available.

Many experts will tell you that the most effective style of parenting is authoritative parenting, which is different from authoritarian. The difference between authoritative and authoritarian is that the latter means obeying without asking any questions, the former is firm but flexible and allowing some discussion. The authoritative approach is one that aims for the happy medium between strictness and permissiveness. Children need some limits, or they'll grow up feeling insecure and lacking in self discipline, but they also need to develop their own individual personalities. As kids mature and develop the ability to judge things for themselves, they can gradually handle more freedom and privileges.

It's important to compliment your children when they deserve it. Some parents are quick to recognize flaws in their children, but merely take it for granted when they do everything right. Praising children for something well done is a way to encourage them in this area. Children who are regularly praised will tend to have a healthier self image than those who are only criticized. It's not necessary to do this in an insincere way, as your kids will be able to sense this, but choose times when it's appropriate.

Try to avoid yelling at your kids, as this seldom has the effect that you want. This is not to say we will not raise our voices from time to time out of frustration. There are many unwanted consequences that may occur if you do this on a regular basis. Yelling at your kids on a regular basis will actually make it almost boring to them after period of time. Your children may become very loud, learning to talk in higher decibels, simply because you holler at them all the time. Rather than yelling, try lowering your voice when you want them to do something. Depending upon how your child is raised, and both of your personalities, you will have different outcomes. Over time, you'll notice that each of your children will require a different amount of discipline as each has an innate level of self-control. Many parenting skills will work, and only after you tweak them a little bit to fit each individual child and their personality.
