Wildlife Art and Financial Investment

by David Tatham

Examining the range of animal painters throughout the world today, it is difficult to know what may be the most lucrative investment. Most customers purchase their paintings primarily for the pleasure of looking at it on the wall, however it is always nice to know that a particular piece of work has held it's value, or even more exciting, the painting has increased in price.

Unfortunately just a very few artists will make it to the dizzy heights of worldwide acknowledgement. Even though many artists are professional and produce superb pieces of art, they will generally pass unrecognized or enjoy only a short period of celebrity status. Only a small percentage of artists will watch their art rise in value over the years, and it is crucial when investing considerable sums of money mainly for the reason of commercial investment that the best information is obtained.

Such artists are far and few between and it is important not to be influenced by an over enthusiastic gallery that wishes to promote a particular artist's work, or alternatively, not to be persuaded that because a shop does not or is not able to purchase such work, that it is of no demand in comparison to the work being shown in the shop. Often this is because a lot of galleries are tied into contracts with publishers, who want only their publications to be displayed, even if the artists are well known or obscure. Another reason is that the works by renowned artists are in great demand that it is often difficult to buy original paintings because of scarcity and the high prices.

Contemporary paintings create much attention, but often disappears as soon as it has appeared, and sometimes the losses can be enormous. From a financial angle, it is always safest to invest in the most well known names that have an excellent track record. Artists that have had many sucessful exhibitions in prestigeous galleries across the country, and that have been widely praised and the art critics.

There will always be an element of current fashion involved with choosing the right style of paintings. The key is to choose the paintings just before it becomes the latest fashion. This can be noticed in many subtle ways, the change in design give clues of what will be sought after tomorrow.

Sometimes, we notice a move towards the past. This is usually a temporary fashion, a stopgap, as the art world changes direction. It should be noted that in difficult financial times , as we have seen over the rent months, that the high end of the art world actually sees a good growth, because of the lack of commercial interest in financial institutions.

A painting by a well known British artist, purchased by the Football Association six years ago for just under two million pounds, was recently valued at six to ten million should it go under the hammer today. An amazing percentage increase in these financially difficult times, which goes to prove the solidity and viability of investing in art.
