If you’ve ever spent time in the hospital, you may have been hooked up to a cardiac monitor to track your heart rate while you were lying in bed. But there are many different kinds of cardiac monitors, and some of the most common are worn while you are walking around, doing your normal, everyday activities. The Basic Concept

No matter what the details, the basic function of a cardiac monitor is the same. The device listens to your heartbeat and records its rhythm. Unlike the electrocardiograms used in hospitals, these types of monitors are worn while you are upright, awake and going about your day. They usually comprise electrodes that are stuck to your chest and a device that stays in your pocket or gets clipped to your belt. The device is the part that records the happenings of your heart. It’s generally no bigger than a deck of cards or cell phone.

Holter Monitors

The difference between one cardiac monitor and another is how and for how long they record. Holter monitors are meant to be worn for 24-48 hours, and they record your heartbeat the entire time. Holter monitors cannot get wet, and men may have to shave their chests to create a clear space for the electrodes to attach. Wearers have to be careful if they get near appliances or other objects that put off an electrical signal that can interfere with the cardiac monitor.

Event Monitors

Though the same precautions must be followed by event monitor wearers, the device itself actually works in a different way. Rather than recording your heart activity continuously, event monitors are only meant to capture symptoms and “events,” which are periods during which your heart is acting abnormally. These are the very incidents your doctor wants to get on record so he can make a diagnosis. If you are using an event monitor, you might start it manually when symptoms emerge, or the device may notice irregularities and start recording on its own.

Memory Loop Monitors

This type of cardiac monitor is continuously recording, but it erases and rerecords over old information. When symptoms start, wearers push a button. This stops the erasing process but retains the information before, during and after the anomaly. Some of these monitors are configured with the device-and-electrodes format, but others include an implantable device that eliminates the need for electrodes. Regardless which you use, the heartrate information is sent directly to your doctor’s office for him or her to review.

Other Types

Auto-detect recorders do use electrodes, but they don’t require the wearer to start the recording process. The monitors notice abnormal heart rhythms by themselves and automatically start recording the events. Post event monitors must be activated by the wearer and only record what happens after the start button is pushed. This style of monitor risks missing valuable data.

Although each kind of cardiac monitor works in a slightly different way, the ultimate goal is the same. Doctors use the data collected to diagnose and treat heart irregularities.
