N gauge is the second most popular gauge of model railroad on the globe. N is 1:160 to 1:150 scale.
N gauge was marketed from Arnold the german manufacturer in the 60's. N gauge is a popular model railroad track scale. Depending on the producer (or country), the gauge reaches from 1:148 to 1:160. The scale is 9 mm (0.354 in). The term N gauge refers to the track dimensions, but in Britain in particular N gauge refers to a 1:148 scale with 9 mm (0.354 in) track gauge modelling. An advantage of N gauge is that it allows modellers to build dioramas that take up less space than H0 scale, or put longer track runs into the same amount of room, because the models are smaller (by nearly a half) than they are in H0 gauge (1:87). While N scale is quite tiny, it is not the smallest available gauge, as Z gauge is smaller at 1:220 and T gauge is 1:480 or 1:450.
N gauge has a big global following group. Scale model trains are made of many standard gauge prototypes from several continent. N scales popularity is the second only to that of HO scale. In Japan, where space in houses is more limited, N scale is the most famous gauge, and HO scale is considered large. Not all modellers select N scale because they have small room. Some use N gauge in order to create more complex or more visually expansive models.
Although model trains and accessories of similar scale existed as early as 1927, modern manufactured N scale model railways were first released by the Arnold company of Nuremberg (Germany) in 62. Unlike other scales, which were de facto standards at best, within two years N scale manufacturers defined the scale, voltage, also the height and type of couplers.
In the United States and Europe, scale models of standard gauge (1,435 mm/4 ft 8 1â„2 in) model railroads are built to 1:160 gauge and made so that they run on N gauge track, but in several other countries changes are made. Finescale hobbiests also use variants of normal N gauge.

N scale locos are driven by DC motors which accept a maximum of 12 V DC. In traditional DC control, the speed of the model railroads is determined by the amount of voltage put to the rails. The direction of the model trains is determined by the polarity of the power to the rails. Since the end of the 20th century, an increasing number of modellers have started using digital model railwaycontrol systems to determine the direction and speed of their models.This had in part been made possible by surface mount technology and new motors that draw very little current (typically 0.2 amps). The most popular digital control systems used in N gauge models are Selectrix and NMRA-DCC.
Standards are useful to both factories and modellers are maintained by MOROP in Europe and the NMRA in North America.
N scale 1:148 to 1:160 is considered generally compatible with 1:144 scale for miniature wargaming. .
