Some Of The Best Vincent Van Gogh Artworks
More than any other artists, it is Van Gogh paintings that people recognize above all others. The work of this seminal artist seems to have seeped into the public's consciousness without leaving a trace of its path in, sneaking in without altering people to its presence. Now babies who are born are seemingly aware of the work of this prolific painter, all without being told about him. The man has become a common cultural meme, with people knowing about him even though they are not aware they know about him.
It seems as if he stands alone in terms of popularity and being recognized by people who ordinarily are not interested in art. His only parallel, it seems, is someone like Pablo Picasso, whom many people know but countless people could not recognize. Thanks to the swathe of self portraits this Dutch artist produced, however, more people seem likely to be able to recognize him than the celebrities which fill the culture pages of today's newspapers and websites.
Though people know of him, they do not know his biographical details. He was born in 1853 at the end of March in the Netherlands. However, his life was tragically cut short by a self inflicted gunshot wound when he was just thirty seven. It is the true epitome of the troubled genius taken too soon.
Because of this tragically premature death, he has become fossilised in amber, forever bright, young and talented. He did not have time to fade away; his talents did not wane. It is believed by many, based on contemporary accounts, that the man suffered from manic depression, which brought on his premature death. As a positive counterpoint to this most negative of illnesses, it was also what caused his amazing art.
For all that we praise him today, the man was not popular during his lifetime. He was a jobbing artist who sold very few paintings and was not regarded as particularly good. He had a late start in the art world, not picking up a paintbrush professionally until well into his twenties. However, once he began, he could not be stopped.
Within the final ten years of his living time on earth, this Dutch master managed to put out more than two thousand oil paintings to the world. A significant proportion of these took the form of an oil painting or watercolor. These were added to by a healthy collection of sketches and drawings. Such a scale has rarely been seen before or since.
Thankfully for the modern world, some people felt that some of this artist's works were worth keeping. They therefore managed to keep them looking healthy and well, and they have been passed down through the generations to today. People are able to view them at will across many museums, where they are kept in pristine condition. Some of this most artist's most famous pieces, including a selection of his interesting self portraits and pieces like 'The Starry Night' can be seen across the globe.
Many of the most famous Vincent Van Gogh paintings are self portraits. As befits a man who was struggling with a sense of identity brought on by mental illness, he was trying desperately to distill himself into artwork. The works are troubled, manic and insightful impressions of how the man saw himself, and are some of the most popular today as the myth of the man ever increases.
