How Control Panel Helps in Working Of An Automatic Transfer Switch
Blades Power Generation Ltd
When the primary source of electricity fails, then power from the generator can be utilized to manually or automatically transfer to an application through a transfer switch. Unlike manual transfer switches where all the operations are performed by onsite personnel, the control panel of an automatic transfer switch instantly detect power cut and take necessary action.
The control panel system of an automatic transfer switch is required to initiate the starting procedure of a generator. The transition from electricity source to generator power is done automatically with the help of control panel. Let us see the functions performed by the control panel of a transfer switch in detail.
What does a control panel do?
Control panel carries out two main functions in a transfer switch to ensure its proper working. Both of these functions are mentioned as below:
Senses the level of frequency and voltage
Detection of frequency and voltage is the primary task that a control panel is assigned to do. Sensing any drop in voltage or a complete breakdown of the primary source of electricity is done by the control panel. It monitors all the phases of the system. It measures any reduction in the voltage below a predetermined setting on any phase.
Sensors are present in the control panel that determines the voltage and frequency information along with the load availability. Once the voltage and frequency reach to the minimum acceptable limit, control panel then initiates the procedure to transfer the load to the generator.
Bypass the time delays
There are different types of time delay systems present in a transfer switch. This is a necessary feature that overrides any transient power failure that would result in a false engine start and thus transferring of the load. This delay is between zeros to six seconds. Once the normal electricity supply is obtained, there is a requirement for another time delay to ensure the load is constant enough to switch from backup power.
The value of this time delay ranges between zeros to thirty seconds. The work of control panel is to pass automatically through this time delay to come back to the normal power source on event of failure of the generator.
How to keep control panel system in best order
Control panel systems need to be tested at regular intervals of time. This type of periodic testing has to be an integral part of maintaining an emergency electricity system. It is advisable to consult a knowledgeable electrical service agency or technician to carry out the necessary repair works at regular time intervals.
Thus control panel plays a key role in restoring electricity at the place where primary power source has failed. The mechanics behind the working of a transfer switch is quite complex as time gaps and various other components play a crucial role in getting immediate backup power.
