Bullying in Schools - How Does It Impact My Child?

by Louise Hanson

Bullying In Schools - Have you ever thought about the long-term consequences? Many people may answer yes, however have done nothing to address the problem. Bullying in schools is often believed to be a normal part of growing up and that somehow the kids will sort the problem out along the way. Nothing changes except for sometimes the problem gets worse, a little bit like burying your heads in the sand and hoping that things fix themselves.

Wait up! Think about it for a moment. Trust me, if school bullying was happening right now to my child I would want it to stop as soon as possible. I would not want my child carrying this type of unnecessary trauma into their adult life. Nor would I want them to carry the memories and emotional scars.

Let's stop for a minute and consider 5 major issues that relate to bullying in schools and the importance of recognising these tell-tale signs in your own child. Once these problems have been identified let's then find ways of immediately working towards resolving the identified problems.

1) Self Esteem: You may believe if the bullying has been identified and has stopped then your child will not have developed the problem of poor self-esteem when they were not at fault. This is a valid point, however, your child may need some help in understanding why they were targeted for bullying and their self esteem and confidence may need restoring.

2) Self Promotion: One of the long lasting effects of bullying in schools may be that your child, in later life, may lack the self belief to promote themselves in areas such as job interviews and leadership roles even though they may have the necessary academic skills and competence.

3) Communication: Adults that have been victims of childhood bullying often have poor communication skills in all areas of their lives including the workplace and social environment. This takes us to the next point to consider!

4) Relationships: Adults who have been bullied as children may have difficulties making and maintaining relationships including friendships when they have not been helped in learning to trust others and feel worthy.

5) Standing Up For Themselves: Having low self-esteem and lack of confidence unfortunately does not miraculously fix itself when we become adults. Such difficulties must be addressed at a young age to help us cope more effectively in our dealings at work, with friends, and our capability to take care of ourselves. We then feel safe and secure knowing we can cope with anything life throws at us.

So, if we consider the long term effects bullying creates and analyze them. Bullying in schools can happen to any child at any point of their education.

Let's look at these issues related to bullying in schools again and consider how they may impact on your child. As adults we are able to observe the long lasting effects of childhood bullying happening with folk in our own community and workplace. These issues should be more than enough to convince any caring parent that doing something like talking with their child when bullying is first suspected or uncharacteristic behaviors are noted is crucial. School bullying can occur in many different ways, for example, verbal, physical or cyber bullying. Bullying in schools is not a natural part of growing up and needs much greater attention and understanding.
