Easy and Simple Homemade Band Instruments

by Autumn Lockwood

Even if you do not have a piano or some other musical instrument at home, you can still make a variety of fun band instruments. Crafting your personal instruments can be a fun activity for youngsters trying to find a way of spending a lazy afternoon. As a matter of fact, adults might have as much fun as children once they make and play their own unique instruments. If you have a large group of children or adults, you will be able to form your own impromptu band, which may be an enjoyable experience. Whenever you do, make certain you take several photographs of the fun, and then display your photos in collage picture frames. Below are a few ideas for quick, simple and inexpensive homemade instruments to help get you started.

Coffee Can Maracas

If you want to make a maraca out of a coffee can, what you need is really a metal coffee can, some popcorn kernels, a roll of tape, and decorations if you wish. Simply take off the plastic lid from your clean can and put in a small number of dried beans or popcorn. Put back on the lid and tape shut. Decorate the can any way that you'd like, perhaps with construction paper or some other embellishments. You just shake the can to play your new maracas.

Tambourines from Pie Pans

Tambourines can be a lot of fun to play, regardless of what age you might be. To make a great homemade version, you'll need two disposable aluminum pie pans. The first thing that you will do will be to nest both of the pans together, then make use of a wooden block and an awl to punch several holes into and through the edges of the pans. Once this is done, you'll flip the pans so that the open sides are now facing each other. Use yarn to string the plates together, threading a jingle bell on the yarn in between each hole. Knot your yarn, and decorate the tambourine if desired.

A Drum From an Oatmeal Canister

People of all ages love drums. If you make these, be sure to take some photos of the child playing it to display in picture frames. To make a very simple inexpensive drum, punch two holes, straight across from each other, a good inch from the top of the cardboard oatmeal canister. Thread a piece of yarn through the holes, knotting inside. You can even knot the thread through a small spool or pony bead to help keep the knot from pulling through the canister. If you make the yarn long enough the drum may be comfortably hung round the neck while playing. After that you will put the lid on top of the container, then decorate in any manner that you want. If you would like to produce some drumsticks, it is possible to do this by gluing two small beads or spools to the ends of two unsharpened wooden pencils.

Create A Humming Comb

The humming comb is really a classic homemade instrument. All you need is a simple plastic pocket comb, as well as a bit of waxed or tissue paper. Fold the paper over the teeth edge of the comb. Then, put the comb to your lips and hum. The paper will vibrate, creating an appealing musical sound.

Start The Music!

When you have made yourself a number of musical instruments, gather everyone together to perform. Ensure that you take plenty of photos, and display your favorites in some 4x6 picture frames.
