Are you using your time wisely?
According to a study by the University of Michigan, the average American adult spends their day as follows:
Eight hours sleeping Eight hours working Two hours eating Two hours commuting and One hour on personal hygiene
That leaves about three hours a day for all the other things that make life worth living. By the time you begin to enjoy those things it’s bedtime again.
But wait a minute, let’s extend this to a week. You only work five days a week. Since you don’t work on the weekend, you should have an extra twenty hours plus the usual hours a day, or about 35 hours each week to enrich your life. That sounds a little better, doesn’t it?
Remember, however, these numbers are based on an average forty- hours work week. Many people work more than that. Managers, for example, average about fifty hours a week and executives average almost sixty.
These figures also ignore illness, which will average about five hours a week over your lifetime. And, of course, there is time spent watching TV, which averages over 26 hours weekly for most adults.
When you add it all up, you don’t have much time at all. After you do all the things you have to do, there is very little time left over for what you want to do. Plus, if you are not careful, you will waste much of the leftover time.
Good time management is not just an issue for work; it is an issue for all of the life. To spend your time is to spend your life; to waste your time is to waste your life. To spend your time wisely is to spend more time doing the things you enjoy.
