Careful MLM Research Exposes Lie Number 5: It’s Really NOT About the Product!

by Kathy Vincent

Let’s start this article off with a question: Can you make a better hamburger than McDonald’s?

I think 9 out of 10 people would say, “Yes. Of course.”

Then here’s another question: How does McDonald’s make millions of dollars a year by selling mediocre hamburgers?

Answer: McDonald’s knows how to sell and deliver a basic, average burger.

Ladies and gentlemen, McDonald’s is not all about their hamburgers, which is their product. McDonald’s is all about marketing. Even now while I am writing this, one of their many jingles is going through my head…”da-da-da-da-da, I’m lovin’ it!” Wow, that’s good sales. And they have been successful at it for many decades now.

So, where does that leave your MLM’s product?

MLM Lie Number 5 says, “We have the best product ever!”

Well…that may be true, or it may not. Don’t get me wrong; you want to join an MLM that has a product you can get behind and support. But statements like, “The product sells itself!” or “Nothing else on the market can even compare to this!” are going to take you and your prospect’s focus away from where it should be.

Good MLM research will lead you to that focus, and your focus should be all about marketing. “Putting all your focus on things like the product, the comp plan and the corporate leadership is the way a consumer looks at a company rather than a business owner.” (From Ann Seig’s book “The Seven Great Lies of Network Marketing”, p. 23)

Remember, if you are in an MLM, you are a business owner and need to run it as such. Yes, business owners must be concerned about their product, overhead and employees, but their main goal is to make money. How do companies make money? They SELL their products.

Please understand this truth: “You can have the most ground-breaking product in the world, but if you’re not using effective marketing, no one will know and no one will care.” (Ann Seig, p. 23)

Look at it this way: Let’s say you have a hot, new product that’s got to be delivered from New York to California. The successful delivery of that product is totally dependent upon the transportation being used to get it to its destination. Here’s the analogy: The transportation is your marketing system. It doesn’t matter how wonderful your product is, if your sales and marketing strategies can’t deliver it.

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for every network marketer to become developed in sales and marketing. It’s what separates the heavy hitters from the small fry. And isn’t it ironic that the second word in “network marketing” is “marketing”, yet most MLMers don’t know a thing about it?

“But, Kathy,” you say, “I do use marketing skills. I speak one-to-one with people using the word of mouth sales’ strategy and I’m always making sure I pass out all of those great brochures my company gives me.”

Well…

1. Just because you are speaking one-to-one with people about your product, doesn’t mean your communication is effective. Just because you play tennis, doesn’t mean you’re a John Mcenroe.

2. Most of the “marketing” materials your MLM gives you are just filled with lots of pretty pictures and quotes that do very little in aiding your sales.

3. And finally, your upline’s mantras about making sure you tap into your warm market, and have home party after home party isn’t going to get you the success you need either.

Success will come with the knowledge that marketing can bring. Your MLM research should lead you to the truth about sales and who your target market should be. If you’re curious as to who that should be, be sure to click on the link below to continue your search into the truth about MLM’s.

All the Best! To Your Success!
