Resume Writing Tips For Successful Applications

by Elizabeth Shelton

In today's economy, getting a job can be difficult. Whether you were laid off or if you are a recent college graduate looking for a first job, even getting an interview can seem like an impossible task. With so many qualified applicants for so few jobs, how can you make sure that your resume is at the top of your potential employer's pile and not at the bottom of their waste bin? By following a few simple yet effective resume writing tips, you can make sure that your resume makes you stand out from the crowd so that you get more interviews and have a better chance of getting a great job.

Many people think that all resumes should basically look the same. While certain basic information is always necessary on a resume, not every resume should look the same. For starters, make sure that you include a clearly visible and easy to read header that includes your name, address, phone number, and email address. A great resume will then contain an objective statement, or a brief sentence or two about what you are looking for in your employment search or why you want to work at the company to which you are applying. Many resumes do not contain an objective statement, but it is extremely helpful in giving your potential employer a better idea of the kind of person you are as an applicant.

All educational experience should be listed regardless of its relevance to the job for which you are applying. For example, if you have a liberal arts degree but you are applying for a job with a real estate agent, showing your potential employer you that you have successfully completed a four year college program can indicate that you are a hard worker who sees things through. If you have relevant experience, such as a biology degree for a job in a lab, make sure that this information is listed first, but also include additional information. Your minor or certificate may make you stand out to the person reading your resume.

Work experience, on the other hand, should only be listed as it is relevant to the position unless your work history is otherwise nonexistent. List jobs that show your interest or dedication to the field in which you are applying and that display that you have experience that relates to the job for which you are applying. If you have worked in a very similar job before, you may be a more appealing candidate as you may need less training on the job.

References should be included if specifically asked for. However, resumes can get rather long and it is important to keep your resume to a readable length. Therefore, it may be prudent to write that your references are available upon request. This way, if you score an interview, you can bring your reference information with you, and save your potential employer the headache of reading through them initially.

Today's job market is competitive. However, with resume writing tips, your resume can stand out from the rest.
