Personal Debt - Are You Working Against Yourself?

by Nico Kleynhans

Throughout our working lives most of us have similar goals in mind: to be successful, to enjoy a certain quality of life, and to enjoy our lifestyles well into retirement. Although the details may differ from person to person, most of us share the common goals of success and security - two things that can't be achieved without keeping personal debt in check.

Looking After Yourself in the Debt Minefield Today's world is vastly different than it was just 20 or 30 years ago. Technology has progressed rapidly, parts of the world that were unknown to many of us are rising to new levels of importance, and our lives are more driven by consumerism than ever before. In this modern world where time is money and patience is a rare commodity, the emphasis is on getting what you want - and getting it now.

Unfortunately, a big part of our modern lifestyle is driven by credit and without understanding the dangers of uncontrolled spending you could be treading on a minefield of bad debts and unpaid bills. In order to reach your financial goals, you'll need to make sure that you are working for yourself, and not against yourself, where credit is concerned. Managing Credit Correctly Despite what some people say, credit is not a bad thing in itself - as long as it's used wisely.

Some assets like your home or car would be unaffordable without bank financing, and in the case of a property you stand a good chance of seeing a return on your investment, even though you may have used credit to finance it. The greatest pitfall of credit is being tempted to buy items you don't need or can't afford. The availability of credit cards, personal loans, and retail accounts has made this temptation almost impossible to resist for some consumers and the pride that comes with owning the latest electronics or having a designer home shouldn't be underestimated. The problem with this type of spending however, is the interest you pay to the bank each month. Over time, this lost income could add up to tens or hundreds of thousands of Rand which could have been invested and grown to many times its value.

Working for yourself where credit is concerned is vital for all consumers. By using credit wisely, to purchase assets such as property and by paying off your credit card in full each month, you'll avoid the debt minefield that so many consumers around the world have stumbled onto. By spending wisely, you'll be able to maintain your quality of life, and enjoy a comfortable and secure lifestyle beyond retirement.
