Sustainable Mining Techniques For The Future

by Steven Pierce

The mining and resource extraction sector in Australia currently makes up approximately 8% of the total national GDP. Furthermore, the global demand for resources, driven by emerging economies such as China and India, will continue to increase contributing to the rise in worldwide mineral prices. This will make it even more important that Australia implements a sustainable mining strategy to ensure the effective and long-term development of Australia's mineral resources.

One component of a responsible mining strategy is to maximize the benefits to the national economy as well as those local regions where mining takes place. As much of Australia's mineral deposits are in remote areas, they are prone to having poor infrastructure. Furthermore, many of these areas have large and traditionally disadvantaged indigenous populations. Finally, current fly-in fly-out (FIFO) techniques reduce the amount of local investment produced by mining activities.

In general, creating a responsible mining strategy involves seeking to transition to a long-term investment plan that focuses on local improvements. This can mean a transition away from lump sum cash payments to payments via trusts or community infrastructure investment. Furthermore, coordinating with the government to address underlying infrastructure problems can help create a long-term economic benefit to the region. These policies will not only have an immediate effect, but also can drive regional economic development and help attract new industries and businesses to the area. In addition to the other benefits, such changes will help reduce the cost of mining in remote areas as the local infrastructure is improved.

Secondly, the mining industry should seek to maximize the efficiency of its resource extraction process. By reducing waste, the long-term viability of mineral deposits can be increased even as the cost of extraction is reduced. For example, the replacement of metal core trays with plastic core trays can reduce the amount of wastage due to the contamination of cores by the chemicals found in drill cores. Additionally, these new materials are more environmentally responsible and can be recycled, further reducing the cost of resource extraction operations while improving their long-term sustainability.

In today's economy, the demand for minerals and the concurrent rise in prices has made creating an effective mining strategy vital for Australia's long-term economic health. By working to address all aspects of this question, from the technical challenges found in developing sustainable mining techniques to the creation of long-term social and economic development policies, the Australian mining industry can be positioned to meet the social, economic and technical challenges of the future.
