Things To Do In Order To Ace Your College Test

by Robert Strong

When you get to college, it is a strange feeling. You have to go to class, which you are used to, but you have a lot more freedom than you may be used to. There are a lot of things to know about class, but there is much more to know about your life at college. Here are some tips to help you.

One of the most important tips a college student should use is to register for classes as soon as they possibly can. These days, many colleges are crowded and classes fill up on a first come first serve basis so make sure to get into the classes you want by registering early.

Make sure you look at the complete list of requirements before choosing a major. If you decide your course of study simply because it sounds like it would be interesting, you may find yourself stuck taking course after course that is nothing like what you would expect, making your time in college more of a challenge than necessary.

College living can be expensive but one way to save money is to prepare budget friendly foods at your apartment or dorm room. You can buy bags of salad, cold cuts, canned goods, nuts and other dorm friendly foods that will fit in those mini-refrigerators. Hot plates are often allowed in dorms, so pick up soups, instant noodles and brew your own tea or coffee for added savings. So, skip the restaurants and eat-in to save cash during your college years.

It is okay if you are unsure about what you want to focus on in school. Every major has required courses such as math and english that are standard for any degree. Taking all of these core classes first can give you the time you need to decide on a major, while getting all of your required courses out of the way.

Whenever possible, opt for used textbooks. A new textbook can set you back well over a hundred dollars and offers no advantage whatsoever. If a course requires the newest edition of a book, consider purchasing the next most recent edition. The price difference between two editions of the same book is astonishing. In most cases, only minor changes are made from one to the next.

Learn how to write an essay using the "5 Paragraph Essay" format. This is a simple essay format that is often taught in elementary or middle school. Although it is simple to learn, it is invaluable in college. This format will help you easily get through most essay assignments.

Avoid distractions when you are in class. Sure, it may be tempting to send a text or write a note in class, but by becoming distracted, you are not going to learn. You can prevent distractions by limiting what you bring to class with you; for instance, leave your cell phone in your dorm.

There is no denying that parties are a big part of college life, but one thing that every student should understand is that too much partying is directly correlated to poor grades. Remember that everything is great IN MODERATION. Try to avoid partying five nights a week and sleeping it off during the days.

If you feel lonely, say so. There are many professionals and other students who are more than happy to spend time with you. Going to college can be a tough thing, and if you ever need to talk to someone about your feelings, don't be afraid to use campus services, or just your roommates, to say how you feel.

Attend every class unless you are sick. Unlike when you were in high school, most of the time you are not required to attend all of your classes. However, if you stay home you may miss valuable information or the opportunity to meet other students and get to know your teachers.

At most colleges and universities, you have the choice to live on or off campus. Usually, freshmen and sophomores are required to live in on campus dorms provided by the school. Upperclassmen, however, may rent their own apartments or houses off campus if they desire more freedom. Often this option is also less expensive than on-campus housing.

Student's discounts are one of the best perks of college, especially if you need to save money. Check with your student resource center or ask an adviser for a list of perks. Many local restaurants, movie theaters and bookstores offer generous discounts when you present a student ID. This allows you to save money and show school pride.

Whether college is right for you will likely be determined by a series of different considerations. The best way to make a smart decision when it comes to pursuing higher education is to do sufficient research on the available options. Keep the above advice close at hand, and you will have the tools necessary to choose your path wisely.
