To and From Heathrow Airport

Based in the London Borough of Hillingdon, west of the city, Heathrow is the largest airport in Great Britain. It's a constant hub of activity, with more international passengers passing through its doors than any other airport in the world. Based on figures from 2010, Heathrow was in fact the busiest airport in the world, so it's no wonder that new travellers might find it daunting! With five terminals and a huge, complex layout, it takes a little bit of getting used to. Luckily, you'll find that everywhere is well signposted, with plenty of friendly staff around to help you out.

If you're going to or from the airport, you'd be wise to ensure you have made travel arrangements in advance. There is a fast train that goes straight to Heathrow from Paddington station in central London, called the Heathrow Express. Also, the Piccadilly Line on the London Underground runs a regular service to all of the main terminals. Some may find it easier to use a Heathrow cab service, especially if they have a large amount of luggage to carry. Booking one of the minicabs Heathrow has to offer could work out cheaper than leaving your car in the long stay car park, so look at some quotes for each option. Another advantage is that Heathrow cabs will be able to take you right up to the door so that it isn't necessary to take a shuttle bus.

Once you're inside, the first thing you need to do is check in and hand in your luggage. Depending on which terminal you're flying from, this can either be done using a self service check in machine, or by locating your desk in the right check in zone. You will then go through security checks; do make sure that everything you're carrying complies with the rules and regulations at the airport. It will only make things longer and more complicated if you haven't! Some prohibited items might include certain amounts of liquid, sharp objects and aerosols.

The sheer size of this airport really is quite impressive; you can fly to 170 destinations, on over 90 different airlines. Once you have passed through security into the departure lounge, you'll find plenty of duty free shops, as well as a large selection of cafes and restaurants to choose from. It is generally recommended that you check in three hours before the time of your flight, as this can be a lengthly process. It also means that you are likely to have some time to kill before take off, so you'll appreciate the amenities available.
